Security Tips:

Key Control Policy

If you manage fifty or more keys, a well thought-out key control

policy which specifies who gets keys to what, based on job

requirements, would be of real value. Keys are frequently thought

of as status symbols and keeping track of them is challenging.

The internet is a good place to view literally scores of different policies.

You are likely to discover organizations like yours with policies

that can be slightly modified to meet your specific requirements

Safes

A secure storage device is critical for most business applications.

Unfortunately, picking out an appropriate safe is difficult and generally requires the advice of a locksmith. There are, in general, three types of safes. One is to resist burglary, one is to resist fire and high temperature, and one provides for both. This is also the most expensive.

Safe Rules:

  1. Do not store cash in a simple fire safe
  2. Bolt the safe to the floor to prevent its being carried away
  3. Change the combination frequently to ensure protection. When an employee, knowing the combination leaves, change the combination. Rule of thumb; change the combination at least yearly.

There are a variety of models to meet the specific needs of a particular business. Always check with your locksmith to be sure you have selected the most appropriate type and model.

Padlocks:

Padlocks can be used effectively when they are heavy duty and used with a heavy duty hasp. The hasp should be attached with bolts, not screws. If chains are used, they also must be heavy duty and bolt-cutter resistant.

Did You Know?

  1. In 83% of all burglaries, the front door is entered.
  2. The chances of your business being burglarized is 1 in 6.
  3. If you have just moved in, change your locks, you have no way of knowing who has the keys to your business.
  4. There are three million burglaries annually in the U.S. Many used a duplicate key. It is essential that you know exactly who has keys to your business. Replacing the cylinder with a high security cylinder is the only way you can know for sure.
  5. Businesses are robbed ten times more often than individuals.

Keys

Your Keys are part of the security problem. Never leave your keys on top of your desk. Never leave your keys hanging on a hook where they are in plain sight and can readily be picked up. Never leave your keys in a desk drawer or filing cabinet, they will ultimately disappear. Keep extra keys, which you do not carry on your person, in a securely locked cabinet or file (don't leave the key to the cabinet sticking in the lock of the cabinet). Key theft, or unauthorized duplication represent the single greatest security threat.

Key Control

Key Control (Have your keys been copied without your authorization?) Having your keys copied without your specific authorization, is the single greatest threat to building security. To have key control you must have a specific key blank which requires authorization by the building owner before it can be duplicated. This key blank can be obtained only from the locksmith that sold you the system. This is an especially important first step toward building security.

Re-Keying Furniture and file Cabinet Locks

Furniture locks used on desks, cabinets and files, provide little security for the determined burglar. Such locks do tend to keep honest people honest. When keys to furniture locks can not be accounted for they should be re-keyed.

Bob’s Lock & Safe has a special for April on Door Closers. Are your door closers working properly? Security depends upon a door closing and latching properly. They also greatly extend the life of both the door and frame. Closers can normally be adjusted to operate properly, quite inexpensively. If you need a closer, we stock a variety of models to meet both your security needs and budget requirements. A door closer that bangs when closing or that is leaking oil requires immediate attention by a trained professional.

We can help. Call us for fast and dependable service.
